The functions of the Bureau of Industrial Resources included collecting statistics, and promoting agriculture, immigration, and industry. The state publications include annual and promotional reports. Those reports contain statistical and narrative information on Alabama's resources for agriculture and industry. The growing of cotton, wheat, cattle, swine, and timber are discussed, as is the mining of coal, iron, and other minerals, the water and railway transportation systems, and various industries such as the manufacture of cotton, iron, and steel. The 1874 report has a list of blast furnaces. The Bureau also maintained a detailed account of government land in each county, induced immigration into Alabama, though not Asian or African, tracked the spread of smallpox and other infections diseases, and discussed the geology of the state. Commissioners included John C. Keffer, 1869-1871; James L. Tait, 1871-1872; and Thomas Lambert, 1872-1874.
